Small Bowel Obstruction

Small bowel obstructions are mainly caused by hernia, scar tissue or cancer. Most obstructions happen in the United States as a result of prior surgery. The intestine often forms scar bands (called adhesions) after being dealt with during an operation. The more bowel-involving surgeries the more scars will likely form. If the intestine gets stuck in adhesions it may lead to a minor obstruction of the intestine. Blood supply may be compromised in severe cases, and the tissues of the intestines may die. That is a condition that is life threatening. The diagnosis can be confirmed by a doctor's exam followed by blood tests and an x-ray or computed tomography (CT) scan.
