Electrical engineering is an engineering discipline concerned with the research, design and implementation of electrical, electronic and electromagnetism-using structures, devices, and systems. It originated as a recognizable profession in the latter half of the 19th century after the electrical telegraph, telephone, and electrical power generation, distribution, and use became commercialized. Electrical engineering is now divided into a broad variety of fields including instrumentation, power engineering, radiofrequency engineeringcomputer engineering, telecommunications, signal processing, and electronics. Many of these disciplines overlap with other branches of engineering, spanning a vast number of specializations including hardware engineering, power electronics, electromagnetics and waves, microwave engineering, nanotechnology, electrochemistry, renewable energies, mechatronics, and science of electrical materials. See Electrical and Electronic Engineering glossary. Commonly, electrical engineers hold a degree in electrical engineering or electronic engineering. Practice engineers may have professional certification, and may be members of a professional body or an international organization of standards.
