Translational Immunology Innovations

The Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) is a public-private partnership between the European Union and the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations with the aim of promoting the development of new therapies through collaborative efforts based on the concept of competitive research. Many more consortia supported by IMI are dedicated to immuno-inflammatory disorders, immune-based biopharmaceuticals and vaccines. Here the present the crucial principles underlying IMI are precisely review on the status of projects connected to translational immunology, and present future topics of interest to immunologists.

Special file of the CTI on the regulation of immunity and infections through the pathways of cell metabolism Immunometabolism is a constantly evolving field of research with articles on this subject published regularly in high impact journals. The promise in this area is that a better understanding of how cell metabolism pathways influence the function of immune cells will open up new areas for manipulation of immunity. However, this poses significant challenges for specificity and toxicity because the metabolic pathways are shared by all cells, not just immune cells. This special section highlights review articles that discuss the complexity and supposed benefits of targeting immune cell metabolism to regulate immunity and infection. The particularity encompasses various areas of immunology, from the interaction between systemic metabolism, immune responses and hematopoiesis, to a recent overview of cellular metabolic pathways and molecular processes that influence immune responses to infection.
