Myrothecium

Myrothecium residuum is a pathogen for bedding plants and perennials that causes crown and stem rot or even leaf spot. Symptom identification and control strategies are essential for management. Myrothecium (family Stachybotryaceae) has a worldwide distribution. Species of this genus were previously classified according to the morphology of the asexual form, in particular the characters of conidia and conidiophores. Identification based on morphology alone is imprecise because there are few characters to differentiate species within the genus and, therefore, molecular sequence data is important for identifying species. In this review, we discuss the history and importance of gender, illustrate the morphology and discuss its role as a phytopathogenic agent and biological control agent. We illustrate the type species Myrothecium inundatum with a line diagram and M. uttaradiensis with photo plates and discuss the numbers of species in the genus. The genus is reassessed based on molecular analyzes of the IT’S and EF1-α sequence data, as well as a combined ATP6, EF1-α, LSU, RPB1 and SSU data set. Combined gene analysis has been found to be more appropriate for solving taxonomic placement of this genus. The results indicate that the Myrothecium species are polyphyletic within the Stachybotryaceae. We suggest future studies necessary for the genre. Myrothecium is a fungal genus that belongs to the Stachybotryaceae family and has been implicated as a promising tool in many important mycotechnological applications such as potent bioherbicides with high virulence against a wide range of weeds and noxious plants from different plant families .
