Xavier Fernando received B. Sc. Eng. (Hons) degree from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka in 1992 (placed first out of 250 students in the Dean's list). He received Masters from the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand (placed first out of 27 students and nominated for Gold Medal) in 1994. He was granted Ph. D. degree from the University of Calgary, Canada in 2001.
He worked for AT&T (Telecom Products) as an R&D Engineer during 1994-1997. He has been with the Electrical Engineering Department of the Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada since 2001. He is also a member of Ryerson Board of Governors for 2009-2011. He was a Visiting Faculty Researcher at the Institute of Advanced Telecommunications (IAT), University of Swansea, UK in 2008. He is the author of more than seventy research articles and a patent. He is leading Ryerson Communications Research Lab with excellent funding. He has delivered invited talks worldwide including the Cambridge University (UK), Princeton University (USA), Athens Institute of Technology (Greece), National Research Council (Canada) and Anna University (India). He is in the IEEE COMSOC Education Board Working Group on Wireless Communications. He is a co-author and editor of the IEEE COMSOC Wireless Communication Body of Knowledge (WEBOK).
