Statement of the Problem: A growing interest for the incorporation of dermoscopy in primary care is limited by the cost and quality of dermatoscopes. We searched for electronically-available dermatoscopes across multiple platforms. We recorded each product’s information, including magnification, contact capability, and ability to purchase at least three products. Among a wide variety of products labeled as ‘dermatoscopes’ or ‘demoscopes’, only a fraction meet the specifications required to be clinically useful. Of this subset, prices range from around $400 to $3,000. There are several within-group variations, such as aperture, smart-device compatibility, and rechargeable vs. battery-operated status. In this report we present a vetted table of commercially available dermatoscopes, their price ranges, and characteristics as a starting point for primary care physicians hoping to acquire dermatoscopes to utilize in their practice. The majority of products labeled as dermatoscopes are inappropriate for clinical use. Of the approximately 20 clinically useful dermatoscopes available at this time, there is a wide price range and variety of features to suit individual needs.
