Wildlife science is the application of ecological knowledge in a way that balances the needs of wildlife populations with the needs of people. Research and education in wildlife science began at ESF in 1914, one of the first such programs in the United States, and was quickly followed by the creation of the Roosevelt Wild Life Station in 1919 Today, our program is recognized nationally and internationally, and our graduates are employed worldwide. Emphasis is placed on applied ecology and students tackle the environmental challenges associated with wildlife management, ranging from endangered species to overabundant populations. The program recognizes and recognizes that wildlife scientists are increasingly dealing with all forms of wildlife, including plants and invertebrates, and the scope is becoming more international. Students acquire training in basic sciences (mathematics, chemistry, physics), then learn basic ecological principles and the evolutionary forces that affect wildlife and its associated habitats. The course work then addresses the assessment and management of wildlife resources as well as the biology and natural history of various taxonomic groups. Students are asked to enhance career opportunities via taxonomic competence with one or more groups of plants or animals, special skills such as GIS and practical work experience as an intern, volunteer or paid employee of a conservation agency
