For many Americans living near or below the poverty level , access to healthy food at an inexpensive price may be a challenge that always puts strain on already limited resources and can force them to make unhealthy food choices. current nutritional recommendations. To help alleviate this problem, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) administers a number of nutritional assistance programs to improve access to healthy food for low-income individuals and households; The USDA also promotes healthy eating through nutrition education schemes designed to succeed in low-income populations and program participants. The most important of the USDA's nutrition assistance programs is the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the Food Stamp Program, which today serves more than 46 million Americans at program cost more than $ 75 billion a year. SNAP's objectives include increasing the extent of nutrition of low-income households and maintaining adequate levels of nutrition by increasing the purchasing power of food for low-income families.
