This is the branch of anthropology that compares and analyzes the characteristics and connections between different cultures. Compared to ethnography, the study of single populations through direct interaction with culture takes the work gathered through ethnographers and then compares and contrasts different cultures. The term ethnology is attributed to Adam Franz Kollár who used it in his Historiae ivrisqve pvblici Regni Vngariae amoenitates published in Vienna in 1783 and described it as such. As: 'Science of nations and cultures, or study of the learned in which they examine the roots, languages, practices and institutions of different nations. Reconstruction of human history and the formulation of cultural invariants, such as the prohibition of incests and the transition to religion, were among the objectives of ethnology; and the formulation of generalizations regarding "human existence," a term criticized by numerous philosophers since the 19th century.
