Quality Articles On Epilepsy

Epilepsy causes huge social stigma and people with epilepsy tend to have a lower quality of life (QoL). They tend to have low self-esteem, higher levels of anxiety and depression. They are more likely to be underemployed or unemployed with lower marriage rates and greater social isolation.

In many parts of the world, epilepsy continues to be viewed as witchcraft, contagious and possessed by demons and ancestral spirits. An Indian study indicated that 15% of those questioned thought that epilepsy was madness, 40% thought that the child with epilepsy should not go to school or that their children should not play with them and 66% s objected to their children marrying a person with epilepsy. Similar observations were found in a study from Taiwan which also indicated that 31% of those interviewed believed that people with epilepsy should not be employed in jobs.

Although there are many studies assessing the quality of life of people with epilepsy around the world, similar studies in developing countries, especially India, are rare. It is necessary to determine the magnitude of the problem as part of a systematic approach to the challenges of managing epilepsy. Thus, we conducted this study to assess the quality of life in epilepsy in our region.
