Geotechnical engineering , also known as geotechnics, is the application of scientific methods and engineering principles to procurement, interpretation and use of materials knowledge of Earth's crust and earth materials to solve engineering problems and design engineering work. It is the applied science of predicting the Earth’s behaviour, its diverse materials and processes to make the Planet more appropriate for human activities and growth. Geotechnical engineering encompasses the mechanics of soil and rock fields. It has applications in the geological, geophysical, hydrological, and other related sciences. Both engineering geologists and geotechnical engineers practice geotechnics. Geotechnical applications include: predicting, preventing or mitigating damage caused by natural hazards such as avalanches, mud flows, landslides and volcanic eruptions. The application of soil , rock, and groundwater mechanics to earthen structures design and predicted performance. In terms of the underlying soil and/or rock, the design and performance prediction of the foundations of bridges , buildings and other man-made structures; and the flood control and prediction.
