Iron Therapy Impact Factor

Objectives: To study the efficacy and safety of intravenous iron and sucrose therapy at a fixed dose in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia in obstetric and gynecological patients. Method: Well compensated anemic patients with an Hb between 5 and 9 gm% were included in the study. The patients have been carefully studied for hematological parameters. Each patient received a fixed dose of 600 mg of iron IV sucrose divided into three of these doses every other day, followed by oral iron therapy to replenish iron stores. Results: The average increase in Hb in the moderate anemia group is 1.85, 2.60 and 3.40 gm% after 7, 14 and 28 days respectively after the infusion. In the severe anemia group, the observed increase in Hb is 2.50, 3.73 and 4.70 g% after 7, 14 and 28 days respectively. A significant improvement in iron stores is also observed after 28 days. The paired t-test and the Z-test were used to test the significance of the increase. Conclusion: Fixed dose iron sucrose and subsequent oral iron therapy are very useful for increasing Hb quickly and safely in patients with moderate and severe iron deficiency anemia
