Sickle Cell Trait

Sickle Cell Trait is a relatively mild condition caused by the presence of a single gene for sickle-cell anaemia, producing a smaller amount of abnormal haemoglobin and conferring some resistance to malaria. Sickle cell disease is a blood disorder in which there is a single amino acid substitution in the haemoglobin protein of the red blood cells, causing them to assume a sickle shape, especially when under low oxygen tension.
