Accurate resuscitation of the critically ill patient with intravenous fluids and blood products is a difficult and urgent task. Ultrasound of the inferior vena cava (IVC) is a non-invasive technique currently used to guide the administration of fluids, although several factors such as variable image quality, time and skill of the operators call into question. general acceptance. This study represents a first attempt to develop and validate an algorithm capable of automatically monitoring and measuring IVC, compared to human operators across a diverse range of image quality. Minimal tracking failures and high levels of agreement between manual and algorithmic measurements have been demonstrated on good quality videos. Resolving issues like interstices in the vessel wall and spots in the lumen should improve the performance of medium and poor quality videos. Semi-automated IVC measurement for non-invasive estimation of circulating blood volume is challenging, but it is doable.
