Transplantation of a follicular unit is the hair regeneration procedure in which the hair of a patient is transplanted in a normal group of 1-4 hairs, known as follicular units. Sebaceously (oil), nerves, small muscles and, at times, fine vellus hair are also present in follicular units. These small units allow the surgeon to transplant thousands of grafts in a single session safely, thus optimizing the cosmetic effect of the procedure. FUT is considered an improvement toward older hair transplant procedures using larger grafts and sometimes creating a pluggy, grotesque appearance. The results would imitate a normal hair growth in nature and are observable as a hair transplant in a properly carried out follicular unit transplant. The journal Hair Therapy and Transplantation deals with the clinical and continuing education criteria of the dermatological community as a full-service publication.
