Duplex ultrasound scanning is a non-invasive evaluation of blood flow through the arteries and veins. This test provides information to help your vascular or cardiac surgeon make a sound diagnosis and outline a treatment plan.Duplex ultrasound involves using high frequency sound waves to look mainly at the speed of blood flow and leg veins. Duplex mainly includes two modes of ultrasound namely Doppler and B-mode. The B-mode transducer obtains an image of the vessel being studied. Doppler probe within the transducer evaluates mainly the velocity and direction of blood flow in the blood vessel . A carotid duplex scanning may be performed to assess occlusion or stenosis of the carotid arteries of the neck or the branches of the carotid artery.
