A birth defect, also known as a congenital disorder, is a condition that occurs at birth whatever its cause. Birth defects may cause physical, intellectual, or developmental disabilities. The handicaps can vary from mild to severe. Birth defects are classified into two primary types: structural disorders where problems are found with the structure of a part of the body and functional disorders where there are issues with how a part of the body works. Functional disorders include metabolic and degenerative diseases. Some birth defects include both functional and structural disorders. Birth defects may result from chromosomal or genetic disorders, exposure to certain chemicals or medicines or certain pregnancy infections.
