Abstract :

Factors in the achievement of excellence in patient outcomes are based on structurally sound organizational foundations such as nursing professional development. This key note will share exemplars of professional development standards that are critical in managing the complexities in healthcare decisions for safe, effective, and efficient delivery of care. The measure of success in nursing professional development as it relates to patient outcomes in promoting excellence in nursing practice emanates from competencies. These evidence based competencies integrates global views and practices; implementation of broad policies such as the United Nations Sustainable Developmental Goals (SDG); advancing healthcare technologies; challenges in variety of care delivery models; individual nursing boards; the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) quadruple aim for cost, quality, service, and safe practice; the escalating demands for healthcare workforce; interprofessional care management; and the focus on population health. The nursing professional development structures and processes must be operationalized at each organization for these outcomes to be realized. The competencies must include community integration, clinical practice, and evaluation of outcomes as methodologies to complement already established and recognize standards of nursing professional practice. The Association for Nursing Professional Development Specialists (ANPD) sponsored the incorporation of nursing professional standards in the development of the onboarding competencies to engage learners in achieving learning outcomes as gained knowledge and experience adds quality, relevance, and credibility in developing competencies. As quality metrics are tied to hospital reimbursement, the expectation in population health extends throughout the communities. Collaboration in care is inherent and the confidence in advancing population health relies on competent nursing workforce.
