The physiological anorexia of aging and its associated weight loss predispose the elderly to develop protein-energy malnutrition. In the elderly, various social and psychological factors, diseases and medications can worsen physiological anorexia and lead to significant weight loss.
Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are both intrinsically associated with many different medical complications. This review article is part of the three-part series planned in this regard. We will only focus on the medical complications associated with the restriction of anorexia nervosa. The second part of this series will be devoted to the medical complications associated with bulimia nervosa and, the third article will discuss the treatments currently available for the medical complications of anorexia nervosa and bulimia. Some of this information is based on experienced clinical opinion.
