Biography

Dr. Jeschke completed his medical school and his thesis with summa cum laude. He completed a research Fellowship from 1996-1999 with the University Texas Medical Branch and Shriners Hospital for Children. During this time he completed his Masters of Medical Science. He returned to Germany, to the Department of Surgery at the University of Regensburg where received his surgical training and passed his General Surgery Boards in 2003, but also was awarded the habilitation (PhD) in Experimental Surgery in 2001. Dr. Jeschke returned to the University Texas Medical Branch and Shriners Hospital for Children in 2004 as Faculty, and was made Burn Attending and Coordinator of Research in 2006. He was named Annie Laurie Howard Chair of Burn Surgery in 2008. Dr. Jeschke was appointed Director of the Ross Tilley Burn Centre at Sunnybrook Health Science Centre in 2010. He was also appointed as Surgeon-Scientist in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto. Dr. Jeschke is an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto.Dr. Jeschke has been caring for burn patients and conducting research in the field of burns for nearly 20 years and in that time has published more than 214 peer-reviewed articles and has authored several books and chapters on burn care. The quality of his research is reflected by his funding. He was continuously funded as the Principle Investigator since 2000 from the German Research Council, National Institute of Health, Shriners Hospital for Children and Foundations. He was recently awarded a grant from the CFI. As well as his many accomplishments as a researcher, Dr. Jeschke is a highly respected educator. He has mentored and trained more than 45 Ph.D., MD, and other graduate students in the field of burn care and burn-related research. He is a sought after speaker and has lectured around the world. Dr. Jeschke is a member of various organizations, e.g. American Burn Association, Association for Academic Surgery, European Shock Society, Shock Society, International Society of Burn Injuries, Surgical Infection Society, Society for Critical Care Medicine, The American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, and Society University Surgeons. He serves on several boards and committees. He also is a reviewer for the National Institute of Health and Department of Defense. Dr. Jeschke has won numerous awards for teaching and research, including the prestigious Fellow Award of the American Surgical Association Foundation (2006), First Prize Poster Presentation, American Burn Association (2005), Surgery Specialty Award, Society Critical Care Medicine (2004), Von-Langenbeck-Prize from the German College of Surgeons (2004), Prize fort the best scientific work from the German College of Surgeons, Critical Care Chapter (2003), Dr. Werner Fekl Förderprize of the German Society of Critical Care Medicine (2002), Best scientific presentation at the 1st World meeting of the Surgical Infection Society, Madrid, Spain (2002), Wound healing-Prize, German College of Surgeons (2001), Otto-Götze Prize of the Bavarian Society of Surgery (2001), Johann-Nepomuk-von-Nussbaum Prize der Bayerischen Gesellschaft für Chirurgie (2000), and American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, Region VI. Winner Residents Award and selected for presentation at the National Competition, Washington DC (1998).
