Professor Warnakulasuriya is professor of oral medicine and experimental oral pathology at King’s College London Dental Institute. He did his undergraduate studies for BDS at the University of Ceylon and obtained his PhD from the University of Glasgow. He is a global expert on etiopathogenesis and tumor markers in oral cancer, and pioneered cancer screening programs in the UK, Sri Lanka, India, Sudan, Japan, Taiwan and Guam. His research has addressed how common risk factors tobacco, alcohol and betel quid affect oral health and are the cause of many disorders of the oral cavity. He has worked across the whole spectrum of relevant health and biological research, and has expertise in the biological sciences ranging from basic developmental, cell and molecular biology, through the clinical aspects of oral medicine and pathology. He has presented numerous papers on this subject at the IADR General Sessions and other scientific meetings, and has published more than 200 papers in peer-reviewed journals.
