Biography

Patrick A. Riley, M.B., B.S., Ph.D., D.Sc., C.Biol., F.R.S.Biol., F.R.C.Path. is currently Director of the Totteridge Institute for Advanced Studies in London. He graduated from University College London in 1960 and forged a career in cellular pathology which spanned a wide range of studies embracing growth control, the nature of malignancy, carcinogenesis and free radical mechanisms in pathology with special reference to melanocytes and melanogenesis. Following junior clinical appointments at University College Hospital, Whittington Hospital and Royal Northern Hospital, he gained a Rockefeller Scholarship (1962-3) and subsequently an MRC Junior Clinical Research Fellowship in the laboratory of Arthur Jarrett. He was appointed a Beit Memorial Research Fellow in the Department of Chemical Pathology, University College Hospital Medical School (Director: Professor Claude Rimington) and thereafter was a Wellcome Research Fellow in the Department of Biochemical Pathology (Director: Professor Kenneth Rees). He was successively appointed Lecturer in Chemical Pathology, Senior Lecturer in Biochemical Pathology, Reader in Cell Pathology, Professor of Cell Pathology at University College London (1984-2000), and is currently Emeritus Professor of Cell Pathology in the University of London. Past and Present Memberships of Academic Bodies include: Board of Pathology, University of London, Biological Council (member of Executive Committee), Royal Society of Medicine, Royal Society of Biology, National Conference of University Professors (formerly Treasurer and Council Member), European Society for Pigment Cell Research (Co-founder and formerly Secretary and Council member), International Federation of Pigment Cell Societies (former Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and Council Member), Association for International Cancer Research (former member of Scientific Advisory Committee). Riley was a co-founder and, until 2008, Executive Editor of the journal Melanoma Research. He is a member of the Editorial Boards of several learned journals (British Journal of Dermatology, Pathobiology, Pigment Cell Research, Tohoku Journal of Medical Science, Folia Biologica, etc.) and a reviewer for dozens of International Journals including Nature, Lancet, British Medical Journal, Biochemical Journal, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Archives of Biochemistry & Biophysics, FEBS Letters, Journal of Biophysics, Journal of Toxicology, Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, Investigative Dermatology, etc. and a Referee and Adviser to many Research Bodies such as the Medical Research Council, Cancer Research UK, The Wellcome Trust, Science Research Council and the National Foundation for Cancer Research. Riley’s research output over the past 40 years includes a Dictionary of Medicine, many reviews and chapters in books, and over 250 substantive publications in learned Journals. These papers cover the general areas of pathological mechanisms as they affect cellular behaviour, especially in relation to free radical processes and proliferation. Many publications are devoted to melanocytes, melanin chemistry, the biogenesis of melanin and aspects of malignancy of pigment cells.
