Cells that is damaged or no longer necessary for growth and development routinely commit suicide through a process known as apoptosis, or programmed cell death. Apoptosis is essential to proper tissue and organ development, and defects in this pathway are known to be involved in cancer development. Any strategy to a successful cancer therapy, must involve the induction of apoptosis in these affected cells so that they can naturally commit themselves to apoptosis. In our research we are targeting both genes that might impede on apoptosis or identify new agents from South African traditional Medicine as potential therapy against cancer. RBBP6 act by assisting in the degradation of p53 through MDM2-p53 complex. We are targeting Retinoblastoma binding protein 6 (RBBP6) through gene silencing, overexpression and co-treatment with plant extracts agents from South African traditional medicine. The ultimate goal of our research will be further developing the novel strategy for generation effective cellular cancer vaccines and African Traditional Medicene (ATMs) based therapeutic protocols such that they can be translated into clinical treatment for human cancers.
