Antimicrobial Drugs

Antimicrobial Drugs are drug used to treat a microbial infection. Antimicrobial medicines can be grouped according to the microorganisms they act primarily against. Examples antibiotics, antifungals, antiprotozoal, and antiviral drugs.

Antimicrobial medicines can be grouped according to the microorganisms they act primarily against. For example, antibacterials are against bacteria and antifungals are against fungi. Antimicrobials can also be classified based on their function. Agents killing microbes are microbicidal, drugs inhibit growth of microorganisms are biostatic. The use of antimicrobial medicines to treat infection is known as antimicrobial chemotherapy, while the use of antimicrobial medicines to prevent infection is known as antimicrobial prophylaxis.
