Biography

Dawn Foster is currently an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University’s School of Medicine. She has led and contributed to numerous research projects in addictive behaviors research with primary focus on substance use among young adults. She received her Bachelor of Science (BS) degree from Messiah College in 2006, and in 2008 received her Masters in public health (MPH) from the University of Texas. With increasingly focused interest in behavioral science, Dr. Foster received a second Masters degree in Psychology from University of Houston in 2012 and, a Ph.D. in Social Psychology in 2013. Dr. Foster’s postdoctoral research was conducted at Harvard University’s School of Public Health where she worked with Dr. Till Barnighausen in the Global Health and Population division. Much of Dr. Foster’s postdoctoral focus was on a large community intervention aimed to reduce risky behaviors and mother-to-child transmission of HIV (see here for more information). A central theme of Dr. Foster’s work is the focus on social psychological principles related to etiology, prevention, and treatment of substance use behaviors among young adults. Outcomes and processes of interest include alcohol, cannabis, and tobacco use and social and cognitive processes.
