Abstract :

Patient participation in the therapeutic decision making is important in terms of patient rights and patient safety. The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of patients who influence the experiences of patient participation in the therapeutic decision making. This study was used the raw data of the 6th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES â?¥) conducted in 2015. The survey sampled 7,380 adults, and 4,443 of them were included in this analysis. Questions regarding the experiences of patient participation were â??Did your doctor reflect as much feedback as you wanted when you made a decision, including medication, examination, surgery, physical therapy, and observation of progress?' The results of the study were as follows. 11.5 % of participants answered that they did not participate. In the optimal model (F=51.59, p<.001, R²=.05), in which household income, occupation, severe chronic diseases, family history of chronic were excluded and only age, education level, subjective health status, self-care of EQ-5D were used as response variables. The experiences of patient participation in the therapeutic decision making were higher as age (β=.11, p<.001), subjective health status (β=.06, p<.001) were higher. On the other hand, the experiences of patient participation were higher education level (β= -.15, p<.001), self-care (β= -.06, p<.001) were lower. In conclusion, it is necessary to be provided for the patients who are younger and poor health status, highly educated and good self-care with the opportunity to participate in therapeutic decision making more actively.
