Abstract :

Ligature strangulation most commonly prima facie is taken as homicidal in nature by many criminal investigators and common people. A series of three cases of Suicidal Ligature Strangulation in Himachal Pradesh, Northern State of India in between 2007 to 2011 is presented. These atypical strangulations are difficult to be appreciated as suicidal. Diligent evaluation of the scene of crime, detailed autopsy and exclusion of other causes of death is very important in terming this kind of ligature strangulation as suicidal. Numbers of Knots, their position, number of turns are important to examine and document in absence of gross injuries in the neck tissues as is found in homicidal strangulation.
