This methodology addresses the inherent limitations of individual sensors by combining their complementary strengths, leading to enhanced perception, improved accuracy, and increased robustness across a myriad of applications. From complex autonomous systems to critical monitoring applications, sensor fusion plays a pivotal role in creating a more comprehensive and trustworthy understanding of real-world phenomena. For instance, in the realm of autonomous driving, effectively merging data from diverse sensors like cameras, LiDAR, and radar is absolutely essential for safe and reliable navigation. This process involves navigating various fusion strategies, from early-stage integration to late-stage decision combining, each with its own advantages and challenges. A primary hurdle lies in ensuring precise data synchronization and skillfully managing the heterogeneous nature of sensor inputs. Machine learning, especially deep learning techniques, provides a crucial pathway to overcome these difficulties, ultimately enabling self-driving vehicles to perceive their surroundings with unwavering consistency, even in conditions that would otherwise be considered difficult [1].
Looking at human-centric applications, sensor fusion significantly enhances the accuracy of human activity recognition, which is vital for emerging technologies such as smart homes and health monitoring systems.
