Peritoneal dialysis, on the other hand, utilizes the patient's own peritoneal membrane as a natural filter, allowing for more frequent or continuous exchanges, often at home. The choice between these modalities is complex and influenced by a multitude of factors, including patient-specific characteristics, medical conditions, and personal preferences. Understanding the nuances of each approach is crucial for optimizing patient care and improving quality of life for individuals living with ESRD. The long-term survival rates associated with both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis have been shown to be comparable, underscoring the importance of a personalized approach to treatment selection. Patient preference, the presence of comorbidities, and socioeconomic factors all play significant roles in guiding this critical decision-making process. A thorough individual patient assessment and shared decision-making between the patient and healthcare team are paramount in determining the most appropriate dialysis modality.
