Toxicology is a research project and important reviews describing hypothesis-based investigations into mechanisms of toxicity related to exposures to xenobiotic chemicals, particularly as it relates to human health. In this respect "mechanisms" is defined on both the macro and molecular scale. Emphasis is placed on findings that identify novel hazards which are often extrapolated to exposures and mechanisms that are relevant to estimating human risk. There is a movement for evidence-based toxicology as a part of the larger movement towards evidence-based practices. Most chemicals display a classic dose response curve – at a coffee dose (below a threshold), no effect is observed.[8]:80 Some show a phenomenon referred to as sufficient challenge – a little exposure produces animals that "grow sooner , have better general appearance and coat quality, have fewer tumors, and live longer than the control animals". A few chemicals haven't any well-defined safe level of exposure. In order to research and assess the consequences of chemicals, toxicologists perform carefully designed studies and experiments. These experiments help identify the specific amount of a chemical that may cause harm and potential risks of being near or using products that contain certain chemicals.
