Thermal comfort is the state of mind that communicates satisfaction with the thermal environment and is measured by subjective assessment. The human body can be seen as a heat engine in which food is the energy input. The human body can produce excess heat in the environment, thereby allowing the body to continue working. The heat transfer is proportional to the difference in temperature. The body loses more heat to the atmosphere in cold conditions, and the body doesn't exert much heat in hot climates. The hot and cold conditions both trigger discomfort. One of the essential goals of HVAC construction engineers (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) is to achieve this level of thermal comfort for occupants of buildings or other enclosures. Thermal neutrality is retained when it is allowed to dissipate the heat produced by human metabolism, thereby preserving thermal equilibrium with the surroundings. The key factors affecting thermal comfort are those determining heat gain and loss, clothing insulation, namely metabolic rate, air temperature, mean radiant temperature, air velocity and relative humidity.
