Forensic engineering has been defined as the investigation of failures-ranging from serviceability to catastrophic-that can result in legal activity, including both civil and criminal activity. Consequently, it involves investigating materials, goods, systems or components that malfunction or do not work or perform as expected, causing personal injury, property damage or economic loss. The consequences of failure can result in action under either criminal or civil law, including, but not limited to, health and safety laws, contract and/or product liability laws and tort laws. The field also deals with retracing processes and procedures that lead to vehicle or machine operating accidents. In general, the aim of a forensic engineering investigation is to identify causes or causes of failure with a view to improving a component’s performance or existence, or to assist a court in determining the facts of an accident. It may also involve investigating claims of intellectual property, notably patents.
