Osteoporosis makes the bones brittle and fragile - so fragile that a fall or even mild stress like bending or coughing can cause a fracture. Osteoporosis-related fractures most often occur in the hip, wrist, or spine.

Osteoporosis occurs when the creation of new bone does not follow the loss of an old bone. Osteoporosis affects men and women of all races. But white and Asian women - especially older women who have gone through menopause - are most at risk. Medication, a healthy diet, and weight-bearing exercises can help prevent bone loss or strengthen already fragile bones

When osteoporosis has weakened your bones, it is more likely that they will crack or break, even the bones in your spine. These vertebral fractures, also known as compression vertebral fractures, can cause severe back pain that makes it difficult to hold, walk, sit or lift objects.

The best way to prevent these fractures is to keep your bones as strong as possible by treating or preventing osteoporosis.

Many people report a certain type of back pain when they have a broken spine, but others have no symptoms. This makes it difficult for doctors to diagnose the problem from the start. But over time, symptoms of a spinal fracture can include

Sudden and severe back pain, Pain that gets worse when you stand or walk, Difficulty bending over or twisting your body, Loss of height, Curved, arched shape in the spine.
