Cell genetics

Cytogenetics is the branch of genetics that studies the structure and behavior of chromosomes and their relation to human disease and disease processes. It is a dynamic field of study which analyzes the number and structure of human and animal chromosomes.

Techniques such as Fluorescent in situ Hybridization (FISH) and Comparative Genomic Hybridization (CGH) are commonly employed cytogenetic analysis.

Cytogenetic analyses are commonly performed during pregnancy to determine if a fetus is at risk for common aneuplodies, syndromes caused by structural abnormalities, or to determine if extra or missing genetic material is present through cytogenetic microarray testing. As the change in the number of chromosomes can lead to the abnormalities like problem in growth and development, thus disrupting the genes and finally leading to the production of fatal or abnormal proteins, thereby resulting in mild to severe or lethal birth defects.
