Since about 1985, with the pandemic of the human immunodeficiency virus and the increase in the number of immunocompromised people, there has been a resurgence of tuberculosis worldwide. The diagnosis in endemic areas can usually be made on clinical and radiological examinations. However, in case of doubt due to an atypical clinical presentation or a lack of clinical exposure, tissue diagnosis is mandatory. If osteoarticular tuberculosis is diagnosed and treated at an early stage, approximately 90% to 95% of patients will recover with near normal function. The mainstay of treatment is multidrug anti-tuberculosis chemotherapy (for 12 to 18 months) and active exercises without weight assistance of the joint involved throughout the healing period. Surgical intervention is necessary when the patient does not respond after 4 to 5 months of chemotherapy (synovectomy and debridement), the therapeutic result is not satisfactory (excisional hip or elbow arthroplasty), or the state of healing has resulted in painful ankylosis (arthrodesis for the ankle, wrist or knee).
