Nuclear engineering, the engineering field that deals with the science of nuclear and radiation processes and their application. These processes include releasing, controlling and utilizing nuclear energy, as well as producing and using radiation and radioactive materials for research, industry, medicine, and national security applications. Nuclear engineering is based on fundamental physical and mathematical principles that describe nuclear interactions and the transportation of neutrons and gamma rays. These phenomena in turn depend when subjected to radiation on the heat transfer, fluid flow, chemical reactions and material behaviour. Therefore, nuclear engineering is inherently a multifaceted discipline, relying on several branches of physics and relying, like the aerospace industry, largely on modelling and simulation to design and analyse complex systems that are too large and expensive to be tested. The successful application of nuclear reactors to naval propulsion contributed directly to the rapid construction of commercial nuclear power plants and this growth in turn increased the demand for nuclear engineering graduates with training.
