Forensic pathology is a pathology that examines a corpse and focuses on determining the cause of death. A post mortem is performed by a medical examiner, usually in some jurisdictions when reviewing criminal law cases and civil law cases. Coroners and medical examiners are most frequently called upon to validate a corpse 's identity. Forensic pathology is Forensic jurisprudence practice. A forensic pathologist is a medical doctor who completed anatomical pathology training and later specialized in forensic pathology. The criteria of being a "full-qualified" forensic pathologist differ across countries. To determine the cause of death the forensic pathologist performs autopsies/post-mortem examinations. The forensic pathologist investigates and records wounds and injuries, at autopsy, at a crime scene and sometimes in a hospital setting, such as rape investigation or in custody deaths. The pathological method, accident, or disease that ultimately results in or initiates a sequence of events leading to death of a individual (also called the mechanism of death), such as a gunshot wound to the head, exsanguination caused by a stab wound, manual or ligature strangulation, coronary artery disease myocardial infarction, etc.
