Novel Bone Marrow Impact Factor

The bone marrow is the tissue comprising the center of the large bones. This is the place where new blood cells are produced. Bone marrow contains two types of stem cells: hemopoietic (which can produce blood cells) and stromal (which can produce fat, cartilage and bone). There are two types of bone marrow: red marrow (also known as myeloid tissue) and yellow marrow. Red blood cells, platelets and most white blood cells appear in the red marrow; some white blood cells develop in the yellow marrow. The color of the yellow marrow is due to the much higher number of fat cells. Both types of bone marrow contain many blood and capillary vessels. At birth, the entire bone marrow is red. With age, it is more and more converted to the yellow type. Adults have an average of about 2.6 kg (5.7 lb) of bone marrow, about half of which is red. Red marrow is mainly found in flat bones such as the hip, sternum, skull, ribs, vertebrae and shoulder blades, and in spongy ("cancellous") material at the proximal ends of the femur and humerus long bones. The pink marrow is found inside the hollow of the middle part of the long bones. There are several serious diseases involving the bone marrow.
