HIV Stigma

HIV stigma and discrimination refers to injury, negative attitudes and abuse directed at people living with HIV and AIDS. In 35% of the countries for which data are available, more than 50% of people report having discriminatory attitudes towards people living with HIV.
Stigma and discrimination also make the people endangered  to HIV. The people most exposed to HIV (key affected populations) continue to face stigma and discrimination because of their real or perceived health status, their race, their socioeconomic status, their age, their sex, sexual orientation or gender identity or other reasons.
Stigma and discrimination manifest in many ways. Discrimination and other human rights violations can occur in health care settings, preventing people from accessing health services or receiving quality health care. Some people living with HIV and other key affected populations are rejected by family, peers and the wider community, while others face educational and professional abuse, erosion of their rights and psychological damage. All of this limits access to HIV testing, treatment and other HIV-related services.
The People Living With HIV Stigma  make the experiences of people living with HIV. In 2015, more than 70 countries used the HIV stigma index, more than 1,400 people living with HIV had been trained as interviewers, and more than 70,000 people living with HIV had been interviewed. Results from 50 countries indicate that about one in eight people living with HIV is denied health services due to stigma and discrimination.
