Recent societal demands to explore more environmentally friendly solutions in the area of sample preparation have gained importance in recent years. Reduced consumption of hazardous organic solvents due to environmental and cost prospects, small quantities of samples available and reduced time have been major incentives for scientists to miniaturize existing methods of sample preparation. Some of these challenges have been overcome by the introduction of the electro-extraction membrane (EME), a completely new extraction principle where a potential difference is applied through a thin organic membrane immobilized in the pores of the wall of a porous polypropylene membrane. The potential difference is used to extract assays of interest loaded from the sample, through the organic membrane, and into an aqueous acceptor solution present inside the lumen of the hollow fiber. These usually focus on the potential of EMEs in bioanalysis, including discussions on the performance of EMEs. Green analytical tools have been developed as modern supercritical liquid chromatography in the field of separation techniques. This chromatographic technique experienced resurgence a few years ago, thanks to its high efficiency, speed and robustness of new generation equipment. These advantages and its easy hyphenation for MS meet the requirements of bioanalysis in terms of separation capacity and high throughput.
