Several groups of organic compounds have been found to be as particularly relevant as environmental pollutants. These compounds, including new brominated flame retardants, disinfection byproducts, drugs of abuse and their metabolites, hormones and other endocrine disrupting compounds, nonmaterial’s, perfluoroalkyl substances, pharmaceuticals and siloxanes, among others, pose new risks to human and environmental health. To meet these new risk challenges, it is increasingly necessary to assess their occurrence and their behavior in the environment as well as that of their degradation products. Therefore, in recent years, a significant part of the research has focused on the improvement of analytical schemes for complex matrices, in which new trends in sample preparation (eg online cleaning systems), the development of new materials and new mass spectrometry analyzers have played an important role. This article presents a general overview of new trends and analytical potentials in the analysis of traces of emerging pollutants in the environment, including chromatographic techniques coupled with mass spectrometry and bioanalytical approaches (biosensors).
