With an aging population, dietary solutions are required later in life to promote health and independence. New research indicates that current dietary guidelines for protein intake may be inadequate to achieve this goal and those individuals may benefit from increasing their consumption and high-quality protein intake frequency. Protein is considered to be more satiating than other macronutrients and it is uncertain if diets high in plant proteins impact the appetite of older adults, as recommended for people at risk of malnutrition. The total protein complement in a cell or cell type at a time is known as its proteome and the study of such a large-scale protein data sets defines the field of proteomics. Key experimental techniques in proteomics include 2D electrophoresis which allows the separation of many proteins, mass spectrometry, which allows rapid high-throughput identification of proteins and sequencing of peptides, protein microarrays enabling the identification of the relative rates of the different proteins in a cell, and two-hybrid screening enabling the systematic exploration of protein-protein interactions. The complete complement of these interactions that are biologically possible is known as the interactome. A systematic attempt to determine the protein structures that describe any possible fold is called structural genomics.
