Asthma is defined as a chronic inflammatory disease of the respiratory tract. Chronic inflammation is associated with hyperreactivity of the airways (an exaggerated narrowing of the airways response to triggers, such as allergens and exercise), which leads to recurring symptoms such as wheezing, dyspnea (shortness of breath), chest tightness and cough. Symptomatic episodes are generally associated with a generalized but variable obstruction of the air flow in the lungs, which is usually reversible either spontaneously or with appropriate treatment for asthma.

Mediators and cytokines released during the early phase of an immune response to an inducing allergen, trigger a new inflammatory response (late phase asthmatic response) which leads to new inflammation of the airways and bronchial hyperresponsiveness .

Evidence suggests that there may be a genetic  predisposition to the development of asthma. A number of chromosomal regions associated with asthma sensitivity have been identified, such as those related to the production of IgE antibodies, the expression of airway hyperresponsiveness and the production of inflammatory mediators. However, more study is needed to determine the specific genes involved in asthma as well as the gene-environment interactions that can lead to disease expression.
