The introduction of conical beam CT (CBCT) devices has changed the way oral and maxillofacial radiology is practiced. CBCT has been adopted very quickly in dental settings due to its compact size, low cost and low exposure to ionizing radiation compared to medical CT scans. As with medical CT, the CBCT offers a three-dimensional evaluation of the maxillofacial region with minimal distortion. This article provides an overview of the basics of CBCT technology and reviews the specific application of CBCT technology to the oral and maxillofacial region with some illustrations.
