Biography

Dr. Jim Clarke is Professor of the Practice of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Vanderbilt University. He also serves as Director of Graduate Studies for the graduate program in Environmental Engineering.

He is a Board Certified Environmental Scientist by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists and a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences.

Jim’s research interests are in the areas of environmental sustainability and resilience, nuclear environmental engineering, environmental risk analysis and performance assessment, the investigation, remediation and long-term management of contaminated sites, and the environmental consequences of energy choices. Jim was a member of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) former Advisory Committee on Nuclear Waste and Materials and was its lead member for decommissioning and risk-informed regulation. He currently serves as a consultant to the NRC Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards and its subcommittee on Radiation Protection and Nuclear Materials. Jim also served on the National Academy of Science Committees on Remediation of Buried and Tank Waste and Tritium Releases from Nuclear Power Plants. He is a peer reviewer for the Department of Energy, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the National Academies, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and several journals and book publishers. Professor Clarke has over 40 years of professional experience with approximately 250 publications and presentations. He received a Ph.D. in theoretical chemical physics from The Johns Hopkins University and a B.A. in chemistry with honors from Rockford College (now Rockford University).
