Biography

Dr. Pravin D. Potdar has obtained his PhD. in the field of cancer research (Applied Biology) from University of Mumbai. Last 9 years, Dr. Potdar is heading department of Molecular Medicine & Biology at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre, Mumbai, India and established Molecular Diagnostic & Stem Cell Research reference Laboratories and carried out research in the field of Molecular Biology of cancer, Cancer Stem Cells, Neurology, Hematology & Infectious diseases. Dr. Potdar has worked as a Senior Scientist for 20 years at Cancer Research Institute (Present ACTRECT), Tata Memorial centre, Mumbai and done extensive research on establishing Biomarkers for early detection of lung and other cancers. Dr. Potdar was a fellow of National Institute of Health (NIH), USA and also worked as a faculty at M.D. Anderson Cancer Centre, Houston, Texas, USA for 3 years. Dr. Potdar is a recipient of prestigious National Cancer Institute, NIH, USA award and a Birla Smarak Kosh, Mumbai, India award for his contribution in cancer research. He has visited several universities in USA including Dr. James Watson’s (Noble Laureate) laboratory at Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. Dr. Potdar has established several Mesenchymal stem cell lines from peripheral blood of Diabetic Mellitus, CML & ALL patients, adipose tissue and breast cancer tumors and studied underline mechanism of these diseases. These findings are well documented through various publications in International Journals. Dr. Potdar has done extensive research on BRCA1 & BRCA2 genes mutations in Indian population & shown founder mutations in Indian sporadic & familial Breast cancer patients. Dr. Potdar has guided 61 students for their 6 month research dissertations from various universities in India in the field of stem cell Research, Cancer Research, Neurological & Genetic disorders and also trained more than 300 students in Molecular Biology and Stem Cell Research. Dr. Potdar is now looking forward to working in developing induced Pluripotency Stem Cells ((iPSCs) from various diseases to use them for the stem cell therapies. Dr. Potdar has been invited as a Reviewer for various journals such as Molecular Pharmaceuticals, Stem Cell Discovery, In Vitro Cell lines & Developmental Biology– Animal, Annual Research & Reviews in Biology and British Journal of Medicine & Medical Research. Dr. Potdar has authored more than 50 International publications & 3 Book Chapters. Dr. Potdar is a member of many National & International Committees. Dr. Potdar holds a position of a Secretary, Scientific Advisory committee & Ethics Committee of Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre. Presently Dr. Potdar is a “Vice President‘’ of Molecular Pathology Association of India (MPAI), which is presently affiliated with American Molecular Pathology (AMP), USA. Dr. Potdar has attended & Chair several International conferences, workshops and seminars all over India & abroad. Dr. Potdar’s name is also nominated in Marquis “Who’s Who in World Book 2012”.
