Abstract :

Technology and medical interventions have become integral with the nursing care given to laboring women and, in many ways, have overtaken the essence of that care. This presentation will discuss many of the interventions- electronic fetal monitoring, intravenous fluid administration, oxytocin administration, epidural insertion, urinary catheterization, and the like that are employed by healthcare practitioners and designed to improve labor care. The presenter will discuss how the interventions actually impair the care laboring women receive and, most important, how nurses can advocate for their clients and/or alter their care in order to provide the high level care that these clients need and deserve.
