Abstract :

Background and Aim: Children�s developmental disorders are a health problem, and due to their strong association with chronic disabilities and huge costs of health care, they are considered as a key health problem outcome in developed countries. Given the importance and prevalence of developmental disorders, and lack of accurate information on risk factors, this study investigates correlation between social support and maternal stress with developmental delay in children aged 6-18 months. Material & Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was performed on 610 mothers and their 6-18 month-old infants in medical centers affiliated to ShahidBeheshti University of Medical Sciences Tehran, Iran, 2014-2015.The participants were selected through multi-stage random sampling. The following instruments were used in this study: a demographic and obstetric specification questionnaire, infant specification questionnaire, Kohen stress questionare, social support questionnaire, and Ages and Stages Questionnaire to determine the status of children�s development. The data were analyzed using SPSS19 software. Results: The delay in infant development was 13/6%. T, test showed a correlation between mothers� stress and delayed infant development (p=0/004(and there was a significant correlation between social support and developmental delays )P=0/01(. Correlation between social support and gross motor and problem-solving skills were observed )p<0/05(. Conclusion: Given the correlation between mothers� depression and infant development, it is recommended to screen mothers for depression in order to perform early interventions in developmental disorders
