Abstract :

New nurse educators and the teachers preparing them have traditionally focused on the teaching aspect of the role and assumed the other pieces will come with experience. The role of the Nurse Educator is much more faceted than that as we now know. Nurse educators are not only teachers but mentors/role models, advocates, researchers, administrators, collaborators, legal/ethical advisors, technology frontiers, and disseminators of information. Nurse educators need not only understand of the teaching portion of their role but all aspects of their role to fully guide their practice. Using the tenets of Teaching, Scholarship, and Service programs needs to be built for new nurse educators to be exposed to it all and have mentors that will enforce a variety. This presentation will identify teaching/learning methods to prepare the new nurse educator for practice opportunities with practical assignments they will use as soon as they begin their new position. Through a focused plan one can aspire to become a better educator. A practice in assertiveness and an understanding of what they will need will define the new nurse leaders in education. A practical discussion of what they need to experience prior to graduation and what they will become more comfortable with on the job in the first year of teaching will be the goal of this session.
