Abstract :

Introduction: Oral cancer, the sixth most prevalent types of disease is a growing health problem around the world and is the second leading cause of the death. The majority of oral cancers involve the tongue and floor of the mouth. Telomerase activity and telomere shortening is an important event during oral carcinoma. Although studies suggest role of multiple proteins in telomere length regulation, there is dearth of reports in oral cancer which is a leading malignancy in Asian countries especially in India. Thus the present study was carried out to study these mechanisms and explore the pathways involved in telomere-telomerase regulation and identify possible prognostic markers to understand the biology of oral tumors for better treatment approaches. The study was done to investigate the Telomere length of isolated DNA by terminal restriction fragment (TRF), Southern blot analysis. Saliva samples of oral precancer, cancer and control patients were collected in sterile eppendroff from patients visiting to the department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology, K.G.M.U, Lucknow and stored in -800C for further DNA isolation .Results: In all of the oral rinses from patients with OSCC were found to possess telomerase activity. It was detected positively in 79.0% (79/100) of patients with OSCC, while it was positive in 51% (51/100) of premalignant patients and positive in 6.67% (8/100) of normal persons; the statistical difference was significant with P < 0.001. But the difference of expression of telomerase activity between the patients in clinical early and late stage was not significant with P > 0.05, the same to that between the patients with and without lymph nodes metastasis P > 0.05.

Dr. Shaista Suhail completed her Ph.D on Oral Cancer from King Georges Medical University at age of 26 years. Done academics projects on Estimation of Coliform and Streptococci from well and hand pump water, Antibiotic susceptibility test against water born pathogens. Passed national level exams CSIR-UGC NET/JRF and GATE with high rank. Currently worked as an Assistant Professor in U.P, India. Published more than 30 research papers in reputed national and international journals. Attended many national and international conferences. Got many awards for best presentation at conferences. Invited as speaker for international and national conferences. Organizes national and international conferences. Awarded as a Young Scientist Award of the year-2018
